In 1949, when Japan was just beginning to recover from the effects of World War II, Mandai opened a small 1.8-meter-wide soap manufacturing and sales shop. When Mandai started, it had only three employees, including the founder, and sold only homemade soap branded “Mandai Oils and Fats.” This small shop was the beginning of the Mandai supermarket we know and love today.
Later, Mandai increased its product lineup to meet customer needs and grew its sales by selling face-to-face.
Mandai is a company where people who believe in eternally prosperous and abundant future come together across generations and work together to achieve our dreams.
The founder, Susumu Kato led a modest life, but he prioritized employee welfare by sharing profits with them, offering comprehensive benefits, and always striving for their happiness and that of their families. He often spoke of his dream to make Mandai the number one company in Japan.
He was a visionary and grew the company based on the philosophy.
Thirty years later, in 1980, Mandai had grown to become a company achieving annual sales of 86 billion yen, with 1,900 employees and 70 stores. Mandai also opened logistics centers, meat processing centers, and prepared food centers one after another. In 2006, it achieved revenue of 200 billion yen.
Since then, Mandai has continued to expand by taking on new challenges, such as opening in-store bakeries and larger stores, launching its private brand “Mandai Senpin” (Mandai Selections), and introducing e-money facilities while adding pharmacies, seafood company, and ready-made meal manufacturing factory to the group.
